In the middle of October, the original set of 31 felony counts each filed against PeTA employees Adria Hinkle and Andrew cook for animal cruelty and 8 misdemeanor counts of illegal disposal of animal bodies were dropped, and Hinkle and Cook were charged instead with 22 and 20 counts of animal cruelty, respectively, and 3 counts of "obtaining property under false pretense."
WRAL TV reports that PeTA employees Adria Hinkle and Andrew Cook have been indicted on more than two dozen charges of animal cruelty and illegal disposal. The new indictments came after earlier charges were dropped in favor of ones that were more specific and more easily proved.
Although this report doesn't indicate such, this new indictment likely includes the "obtaining property under false pretense" charge, one that is easier to prove than animal cruelty.
Here's WRAL-TV's brief report, which includes a picture of the two:
HERTFORD COUNTY, N.C. -- Two PETA employees charged with dumping dead animals in a trash bin face new charges.
The Hertford County grand jury indicted Andrew Cook and Adria Hinkle for euthanizing dogs and cats.
The pair is accused of promising workers at animal shelters that the pets would be adopted, then dumping them.
That would be the basis for the charge of "obtaining property under false pretense."
The indictment covers more than two dozen charges of animal cruelty and illegal disposal.
Cook and Hinkle are expected to stand trial later in November.
I expect a trial date will be set shortly.
For a nice summary of the facts, read this (op cit). This promises to be a most interesting case.
UPDATE — 11/2/05, 3:00 PM PST: Ouch! More bad news for PeTA . . .
The Center for Consumer Freedom has issued a media advisory announcing that David Martosko, the CCF's Director of Research, is available to the press for comment about the upcoming trial of Hinkle and Cook. You can download the one-page pdf file here.
Now I ask you . . . what reporter wouldn't positively salivate over an opportunity to hear Mr. Martosko's take on the trial?
